PRESIDENT'S ACCEPTANCE SPEECH

1.0 PROTOCOL

I have had many occasions in my life to give thanks to God for various reasons. Today, however, stands out clearly as one of the greatest days for which I thank God for His infinite Grace on me as an Insurance practitioner. May His name be glorified. For those He has used in making today possible both along the Insurance pathway and in the larger traffic lanes of life.

My entry into the profession of Insurance was both by chance and divine intervention.

I studied Biology at the University of Lagos. On graduation, I was persuaded to try my hands on Insurance. I started my career in Oct 1980 at NICON, as a graduate Trainee during the regime of Mr. Olayinka Lijadu. I am particularly grateful to Mr. Lijadu who introduced the graduate recruitment scheme in 1977 through which graduates in any field of study were employed and trained to become insurance practitioners. I appreciate various past Managing Directors of NICON for the opportunities given to me in my 26 years career at the corporation to attend various training programmes both locally and internationally.

I recognize the awesome responsibility and challenge the Presidency of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria places on me especially at this time of changes in the Global Economy, and the resultant effect on National Economies. The effect of the global economic recession places more responsibilities on Professionals, to find a lasting solution to the lingering economic crisis in the world.
We are empowered by our statute to determine the standards of knowledge and set the standard for skills to be acquired by insurance practitioners and to review such standards from time to time.

2.0 MY PROGRAMME

As I assume the Presidency of this great Institute today, my resolve is to continue from where our predecessors and founding fathers stopped. We shall build on this solid foundation.

I pray that God Almighty will help us to move our noble profession and institute to the next higher level.
The task before us, though may be daunting but they are achievable.

I appreciate the efforts of our past leaders and we will continue to carry out the policies of Council in a way that will ensure the continued growth of the Institute.

No nation can develop without embracing modern insurance. Our golden jubilee anniversary lecture had as its theme insurance as a vehicle for national development. It is a known fact that Africa generates only about 1% of the World Insurance Premium while South Africa and North Africa accounts for 84% of that 1%. The rest of the African countries including Nigeria share the remaining 16% of 1%.

In my years of exposure to Insurance as a Profession, and as a business, I have come to realize that the major impediment to the penetration of Insurance in Nigeria is lack of Awareness, coupled with the culture and attitude of our people. It is therefore my desire to make an impact in the area of Awareness creation for the Industry.

The theme and focus of my tenure will therefore be “CHANGING INSURANCE PERCEPTION IN NIGERIA FOR GLOBAL COMPETITION”. This will be pursued from the following fronts:

2.1 AWARENESS

The awareness programme would place emphasis on mass education on the various aspects of insurance and the value of Insurance to individuals, businesses, small, medium and large enterprises and the nation’s economy as a whole.

The programme will be driven using the mass media to explain the values of Insurance and its principles. This would be done on the pages of newspapers, radio and television, campaigns at public places and possibly using markets, churches/mosques and collaboration with various Government agencies.
To achieve this lofty idea therefore, a Nation-wide Radio programme will be embarked upon which will have wide coverage and reach out to the grass root. Special focus will be on Insurance as an agent of development even in the rural areas. Some aspect of the radio programme will be translated into the major Nigerian languages and will be broadcast at regular intervals for effect.

As the programme progresses, members of the public will be encouraged to phone-in and ask questions on Insurance.

In addition to this Radio programme, the Print media will be effectively utilized to further drive this awareness campaign. Insurance companies etc will be encouraged to partner with the institute in this mass awareness project. The net effect is that we believe it will impact positively on the performance of the insurance sector and improve our contribution to the Gross domestic product which today is about 1%.

2.2 NATIONAL ESSAY COMPETITION

Students in tertiary and secondary schools nation wide would be encouraged to participate in a yearly national essay competition at the end of which prizes would be awarded to the best three (3) students in different categories.

The Federal Ministry of Education and the state Ministries of Education will be fully involved in packaging this programme

2.3 MENTORING

Most of us Professionals seated here tonight were directly or indirectly encouraged by some people to choose our profession.

It is my desire that we set in motion, a system whereby, an Insurance Professional mentors at least two young persons, with a view to making him/her become a thorough bred Insurance Professional within a period of 3years.

This is one way we can attract younger people into the profession and give back something to our profession.
The Operation 5000 graduates project will be given full attention in order to drive home this point. Insurance companies should continuously review their manpower requirement and adopt a proactive approach to continuously recruit new entrants into the industry and the entrants encouraged to pursue their professional examinations.
2.4 COLLABORATION WITH OTHER PROFESSIONAL BODIES

We have invited to this occasion all the professional bodies in the financial sector. The aim is to begin to build bridges and explore areas of collaboration and cooperation to generate ideas that will enhance our relationship with other institutes.

2.5 WIDER ACCEPTANCE FOR THE INSTITUTE’S DIPLOMA CERTIFICATE

I am happy at the current acceptance rate of the Institute’s Diploma to the generality of organizations in Nigeria. However, during my tenure, effort would be intensified through the already existing forum with the Federal Ministry of Education to accredit the Institute’s Diploma Certificate. This would enable our colleagues to be admitted for post-graduate studies using our Diploma in the Nations universities.

We shall endeavour to partner with other African, and West African States in particular, to make our Diploma certificate acceptable in all the countries in the continent. This will increase the mobility of our members within the continent. Presently many insurance companies have established subsidiaries in some African Countries and posted personnels from here. With our certificates duly accredited, they may not have to take any examination before practicing in those countries.

2.6 ENCOURAGING BRANCHES OF THE INSTITUTE TO CREATE AWARENESS IN THEIR AREA OF JURISDICTION

There are fourteen (14) branches of the Institute located in all the geographical zones of the country.

We will strive to harness the potentials of these branches, to enable them perform their functions which include:
 Membership drive
 Awareness creation
 Enlightenment programmes for Insurance consumers in Motor parks and other public places
 Career guidance and counseling for Secondary School Students.

An annual award for the best branch will be instituted to encourage performance.
2.7 ABUJA LIAISON OFFICE

The need to get closer to Government cannot be over emphasized.
To this effect, we shall establish a liaison office in Abuja, to partner with the Abuja branch in facilitating close relationship with the Federal Government. The branch would serve our members located in Abuja and the surrounding states.

The plot of land allocated to us in Abuja will be developed as a matter of priority project to contribute our own little effort towards the building of the capital city.

2.8 PHYSICAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE COLLEGE OF INSURANCE AND FINANCIAL STUDIES

We have a 2 hectare parcel of land located along the Lagos/Ibadan Express Way for which the fence work has commenced.

The designs are almost ready and hereby invite development agencies to partner with us to ensure early completion of the projects.

At the 2008 AGM in Abuja, we resolved to make compulsory levy contribution towards the development of the college. I am pleased to note that members have been responding positively and would appeal to those who have not paid to redeem their obligation towards the college project.

The model of approach for the physical development would include Build Operate and Transfer (BOT), using mortgage bonds, individuals/companies could make donations towards the project.
Such companies would have such buildings named after them and their names would have been written in Gold and posterity would appreciate their efforts.

2.9 HUMAN RESOURCE DEVELOPMENT

We cannot overemphasize the need to train and retrain our members. To this end, we shall monitor every professional and regularly advice members of their M.C.P.D points. It is mandatory that every member should endeavor to develop themselves. Programmes would be initiated nationwide to give members opportunity to participate in future M.C.P.D programmes.
Our library will be further equipped to ensure that up to date relevant materials are available to members. At Branch chapters where we have study centers, we shall provide mini library for members use.

Some of our text books in the current syllabus would be reviewed to adapt it to our local environment and to meet the current economic realities of the ever changing business environment.

3.0 ELDERS FORUM

As part of the activities marking our Golden Jubilee Anniversary, we had a luncheon for our Elders. It afforded the opportunity for re-union and reminiscence of their early days in this noble profession.

We shall therefore resuscitate the Elders forum and take advantage of
their wise counsel.

We appeal to our colleagues and insurance companies to graciously sponsor this forum to ensure continuity. We would also request that our Elders should oblige us when we send our invitation for future programmes.

3.1 FUNDINGS

Funding we all know is key to the successful execution of any project. We have in the last few years made surpluses. I will implore members and companies to continue to give their support by paying their subscriptions and making generous donations to support the activities of the institute.

Other sources such as income from the recently incorporated CIIN ventures, grants from the government and investment income would boost our finances and ultimately we shall become self sustaining.

We wish to appreciate the support of the National Insurance Commission and in particular the Commissioner for Insurance Mr. Fola Daniel in ensuring prompt releases of our subvention and appeal that the commission should assist us in the physical development of the permanent site for our College of Insurance and Financial Studies.

3.2 ACCREDITATION COMMITTEE

We shall constitute an accreditation committee to accredit all organizations involved in the manpower training programmes for our members. The aim is to set some standards for the trainers.

3.3 CONCLUSION

Distinguished guests, professional colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, the task before us is a daunting one. I therefore invite all members of our institute and friends of our industry to join us in the task ahead to ensure that every Nigerian would know about insurance as a profession and ultimately become consumers of our products and services.

We intend to dissipate our energies in the direction of progress with an action centered plan to take our institute to the next level, as we commence our journey into the 51st year of our great institute.

Professionalism is the bedrock of any profession, I will therefore enjoin all my colleagues to always act professionally particularly now that the world (Nigeria not an exception) is facing economic recession resulting from the crisis in the developed economies.
As professionals, we are indebted to our profession to make it better than when we entered. We should therefore devote our efforts at advancing the profession

As we begin another era in the life of our institute, I will be fulfilled if at the end of my tenure the goals anticipated above are fully accomplished.

3.4 TRIBUTES

Permit me to specially pay great tributes to all past presidents and in particular our immediate Past President Mr. Adeyemo Adejumo and council members and staff of the institute who had worked tirelessly in the past to ensure that the institute is what it is today. My prayer is that God would reward you all abundantly.

My appreciation also goes to my former employer NICON, and present employer Alpha Choice Insurance Brokers and my colleagues both past and present for their love and support at various times in my 29 years career in this noble profession.

3.5 APPRECIATION

I wish to express my appreciation to the investiture Committee, chaired by Mr. F.K. Lawal for their wonderful contribution to the success of this event, and hereby transform this committee to the monitoring committee for my tenure.

They would on regular basis review the performance score sheet of my presidency based on a detailed blue print which time will not allow me to present to this audience.

I want also to express my sincere appreciation to my wife of inestimable value who has always been there for me and my children for their understanding particularly in their early years when we were studying for the examinations and daddy was always not at home.

I wish to express my appreciation to my parents, my uncles, brothers and sisters, family relations and friends, our clients at Alpha Choice Insurance Brokers who came from far and near to witness this historic occasion.

I am particularly grateful to the Bishop of Ughelli Diocese - Rt. Rev. Muoghereh who had to shift an occasion back home to enable him attend this ceremony. I must acknowledge the role he played in my life as a little form one student when he taught us Christian religious Knowledge at college.

My special appreciation goes to the Gentlemen of the Press and the various media organizations for the great contributions made in the past in ensuring that all our events were well publicized and Nigerians are better educated today than 10 years ago. One of the cardinal programm of my tenure is awareness. I will therefore solicit your extra-ordinary support and cooperation as I invite you to partner with our institute and the insurance industry to ensure that until every Nigerian knows about insurance and purchase one form of insurance as a risk management tool, the awareness campaign will not stop.

Distinguished guests, professional colleagues, ladies and gentlemen, I am challenged by your presence here today and believe with your support and prayers, together as a team we shall succeed in taking our institute to greater heights.

I thank you all for sparing time of your very busy schedules to honour our invitation to this investiture dinner.

My prayer is that God would grant you all journey mercies back to your destinations.

On behalf of my wife & children I wish to welcome every one here present at this occasion and express my appreciation in particular to Olorogun (SEN.) Felix Ibru the chairman for this occasion, the various special guests of honour, our distinguished colleagues, friends, relations who came from far and near to witness this once in a life time opportunity to be installed as the President of our institute.

Thank you for your rapt attention and God bless you all.

2009 PROFESSIONALS' FORUM COMMUNIQUE

COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE 2009 INSURANCE PROFESSIONALS’ FORUM HELD FROM 23RD TO 26TH SEPTEMBER 2009 AT THE GATEWAY HOTEL, IJEBU-ODE, OGUN STATE.

PREAMBLE

The Professionals’ Forum is, unarguably, the gathering of insurance egg-heads.  Annually, the forum provides immensurable opportunities for deliberations on issues pertinent to the growth and development of the industry.  The 2009 edition comes at an opportune time as it coincides with the emerging realities in the nation’s financial services sector.  The forum theme: “The Global Financial Crisis and Implications for Insurance Professionals” is therefore quite apt.  Presentations were made on the theme as well as the sub-theme topic titled: “Code of Ethics and Corporate Governance in the Insurance Industry”. Participants deliberated at length on the issues which emanated from the papers and from subsequent discussions and reached the following resolutions:

1.       That the Insurance Industry decries the present dearth of infrastructural facilities in the country and calls on the Government to step up infrastructural development in order to reduce cost of production as investment stimulus.

2.       That the Industry should put in place an effective framework for the enforcement of its Code of Ethics and Codes of Good Corporate Governance and ensure, in collaboration with the Regulator, that any infractions attract stiff penalties.

3.       That the Industry should strengthen its machineries for the design of new and improved products while repositioning for better and more effective service delivery by adopting a financial services operational model.

4.       That operators should further harness the benefits of strategic mergers as a self-regulatory measure rather than wait for the regulator’s prescription for capital adequacy.

5.       That there should be concerted efforts by Industry operators to increase collaboration on the creation of insurance awareness across the nation.

6.       That the Nigerian Insurance Industry should develop and implement appropriate domestic stimulus packages aimed at mitigating the emerging effects of the global financial crisis.
