TRAINING
The Training Directorate is entrusted with conducting certification courses for agents and brokers, organizing MCPD programmes and courses, conferences, seminars, workshops and other activities aimed at improving the standards of practitioners in the Industry. It also coordinates tuition classes for students preparing for the Institute's examinations.
TRAINING COURSES
The Institute undertakes the following training programmes :
- Basic training and retraining courses in INSURANCE
- Mandatory Continuing Professional Development Programs (MCPD).
- Organization of Conferences, Seminars, Professional Fora , etc.
- In-house courses for Companies
- Collaborative courses with other organisations .
- Library services and publications.
GENERAL OVERVIEW ON MCPD:
The Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD ) programme is a programme whereby a professional regularly up-dates his/her knowledge in order to respond positively to changes in the environment and meet the challenging needs of their clients.
Professional members in the Institute adopted a resolution for the commencement of the MCPD in 1999 through the final communiqué issued at the conclusion of the Institute's 1998 Professional Forum held at the Gateway Hotel, Abeokuta , Ogun State , Nigeria in September 1998
1. M C P D
The Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) is a programme whereby a professional regularly up-dates his/her knowledge in order to respond positively to changes in the environment and meet the challenging needs of his clients.
Professional members in the Institute adopted a resolution for the commencement of the MCPD in 1999 through the final communiqué issued at the conclusion of the Institute's 1998 Professionals' Forum held at the Gateway Hotel, Abeokuta , Ogun State in September 1998.
The Institute has designed the MCPD programme as one that will elicit mass participation
and will enhance the ability of members to operate more professional, efficiently and
effectively in our dynamic business environment. A lot of work has been put into
designing this programme to serve members but there is still room for adjustment.
Members' constructive reactions and suggestions on the programme are welcomed
either directly to the Institute or to any of the members of the Monitoring Group
2. WHY MCPD?
(a) To encourage insurance professionals acquire new technical knowledge and skills for improving their current effectiveness and in maintaining professional excellence at all times.
(b) To assist insurance professional respond efficiently to the ever changing needs of their clients in a dynamic business environment through greater expertise and create public confidence in the industry in the drive towards increasing the demand for insurance services in the country.
(c) To make members aware of influences of other branches of the industry on their own activities.
(d) To enable members adapt to and play a more responsible role in the emerging global economies of the next millennium.
(e) To encourage members to be aware of developments and impact of other professions on the insurance practice.
3. THE TARGET OF MCPD
The MCPD is targeted at every professionally qualified member of the Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria.
These are associate members and fellows of the Institute by examination.
4. EXEMPTION FROM MCPD
The following categories of members of the Institute may be granted exemption from the MCPD programme.
i. Members who are not less than 60 of years age who have signified in writing to the Institute their intention to fully retire from active practice of the profession and specifically requested for exemption.
ii. Members on special national or state assignments.
. The Institute shall determine what constitutes a special assignment from time to time.
. Exemption under this category shall granted only for the duration of such an assignment (except those lasting for an indefinite period of time). This category of members shall however be requested to obtain from the Institute, for a fee materials produced by the Institute for the MCPD programme on a regular basis throughout the duration of the exemption.
. Any other group of members that the Institute may decide to grant exemption from the programme from time to time e.g. for serious prolonged sickness.
5. THE SCOPE OF MCPD
The MCPD programme shall be carefully designed to provide members in all arms of the industry with the required knowledge and adequate information needed to improve their professional competence and expertise from time to time.
Emphasis of the programme shall be on the training and retraining of members on regular and continuing basis. Certain activities shall be designated MCPD Programmes and such shall be undertaken by the Institute and other accredited bodies and organizations. The scope of the MCPD programme shall cover the following fields of practice among others:
- Underwriting
- Claims
- Reinsurance
- Broking
- Loss Adjusting
- Consulting
- Marketing
- Financial Management
- General Management
- Risk Management and Survey
- Information Technology
- Training and Manpower Development
At the conclusion of every structured formal activity relating to the MCPD programme, open forum shall be held for sharing practical experience among attendees in related areas., It is hoped that the programme/discussion will focus on ethics, economics, social, political and other issues relating to he sound practice of the insurance profession.
The Institutes shall advertise its MCPD programmes on a regular basis.
6. CONTENTS OF MCPD PROGRAMME
Under the MCPD programme members will be required to under take a variety of ‘structured' and ‘unstructured' activities for which points will be awarded.
Members will be required to attend such activities in person and participate actively from the commencement to the conclusion before points are awarded to them under the programme.
POINT SCORING
Every member of the Institute shall be required to actively participate in the following:
(a) The Mandatory Continuing Professional Development (MCPD) programme organized by the Institute.
(b) The Institute's events and activities as listed below.
(c) Member's areas of specialization/special interest or employers training needs as may be accredited by the Institute from time to time.
(d) A minimum of 120 points must be obtained within a period of three years from the date of commencement of the programme . Members are to score a minimum of 40 points in any one year distributed as follows:
. Minimum of 35 points on structured and
. Minimum of 5 points on ‘unstructured' activities for which points will be awarded.
(e) The Maximum points scorable in any one year shall not exceed 60.
(f) Senior citizens who have attained the age of 60 years and are still in active practice shall not be required to comply with the minimum points stated above. They shall be encouraged to take active part in the MCPD programme and the minimum points required from them shall be determined by Council from time to time.
The fact that a member has obtained the maximum points allowed in any one year does not preclude hi ,/ her from participating in CPD programmes although no further points will be scored.

MCPD COMMENCEMENT AND DURATION
(a) Commencement
The Council has approved that MCPD programme should commence in April 2000 and that members should be notified accordingly at the Annual General Meeting of the Institute on he 28 th April 2000 .
(b) Duration of each Course/Seminar
The period of running any single course/seminar for the MCPD programme shall not be less than two days (excluding cocktails and other social aspects of each programme ).
9. ACCREDITATION GUIDELINES
Courses may be accredited by the Institute on specific/individual course basis or on general basis (i.e. en-bloc). Courses run by individuals shall be accredited on specific basis. Courses run by organizations or firms of manpower development consultants shall be accredited on a general basis.
Such organisations or firms shall be required to submit they training and man power development courses to the Institute either quarterly, half yearly or yearly (as they may wish,), for accreditation.
How to apply for Accreditation
Private organisation , firms of consultants and individuals may apply to the Institute for accreditation of courses and manpower development programmes they intend to run under the MCPD programme . Such shall contain information highlighted below;
( i ) The theme of the course/seminar
(ii) Objectives of the course/seminar
(iii) The target audience
(iv) Course synopsis or outline
(v) Names and resumes of facilitators
(vi) The date(s), venue (s) and duration of the course/seminar
(vii) The duration/period of presentation of each paper.
All applications for accreditation of courses for the MCPD shall be approved in accordance with stipulated Guidelines of the Institute. Any application for the approval of a course must be received by the Institute at least 8 weeks before the proposed dates of commencement.
10. ACCREDITATION FEES
Individuals, organisations and firms applying for the accreditation of courses under the MCPD programmes shall be required to pay an accreditation fee per course. Appropriate fees shall be determined by the Institute from time to time. The fees shall be graduated according to the number of proposed courses of applicants annually.
11. PENALTIES FOR NON-COMPLIANCE BY MEMBERS
All professionally qualified members of the Institute shall be required to actively participate in the MCPD programme as earlier specified. The follwing penalties shall be imposed for non compliance.
- First year
(a) ( i ) A member who does not meet the stipulated yearly minimum score in the
first year of the programme will be notified in writing by the Institute.
- Second year
(ii) If such a member persists with non compliance in the second year, he/she
shall be given a final warning.
- Third year
(iii) If this continues to the third year, such member's name shall be de-listed
form the statutory register of member provided for in Chartered Insurance of Nigeria Decree No. 22 of 1993 and a report to this effect shall be forwarded to the National Insurance Commi
INSTITUTE'S BRANCHES
The Institute will employ the services of its branches in organization its MCPD
programmes outside Lagos . Members residing outside Lagos will be required to liaise
with the Institute's branches nearest to them for regular information on the MCPD
programmes .
In addition to the above, members are strongly advised to participate actively in the
programme of Institute's branches to which they belong as such activities are point
scoring under the programme .
13. COURSE FEES AND COSTS
The Institute will charge nominal fees for its MCPD courses, such fees shall cover seminar
materials, tea/coffee and lunch only.
